![]() Morales’ Democratic primary opponents are Linda Kero of Leesburg and Stephanie Dukes. In other words, he hasn’t dumbed down the policy side of his campaign. Unlike too many other candidates, his campaign website is less about vague, treacly statements of belief and more about specific policy priorities. Morales has thought through other issues as well, from the environment to affordable housing to LGBTQ equality. Watch interviews with these candidates at /interviews. Sentinel Columnist Scott Maxwell participates in interviews and deliberations. Marcial Ocasio, Jay Reddick, David Whitley and Editor-in-Chief Julie Anderson. Waltz and Murphy have both earned another term in Congress.Įlection endorsements are the opinion of the Orlando Sentinel Editorial Board, which consists of Opinion Editor Mike Lafferty, Jennifer A. ![]() We saw Waltz as a pragmatist when we endorsed him in 2018 for the District 6 seat, and haven’t seen much reason to second-guess that assessment. Curtis is not to be taken seriously in this election. With a growing number of QAnon believers gunning for seats in Congress, the last thing we need is a conspiracist of a different stripe. Nor is any of this supposedly scandalous information on his campaign website. The Clint Curtis we interviewed this time came out of the gate hurling accusations against Waltz that aren’t worth repeating here, especially considering that we asked for evidence backing these allegations and Curtis failed to provide it days later. In our interview with the candidates in this race, we hardly recognized Democrat Clint Curtis, who in the primary presented some interesting ideas along with - gasp! - proposals on how to pay for them. (We hope that Waltz’s poor judgment in joining the Matt Gaetz-led Republicans who crashed a committee hearing during the Trump impeachment proceedings was an anomaly.) There’s no question about his conservative outlook on issues but we see far less of an inclination toward social-issue warrior or presidential manservant. We also liked his compassion after Hurricane Dorian leveled parts of the Bahamas and he signed a letter calling for special humanitarian visa waivers (in contrast to President Trump, who didn’t want any hurricane refugees in the United States). Waltz concerns himself with trying to strengthen the national defense and the U.S. Michael Waltz, 2018 candidate for Congress in District 6 Johns counties - and now serves on the House Armed Services and Science, Space and Technology committees. He was first elected to Congress in 2018 - representing a district that covers Volusia and Flagler counties and pieces of Lake and St. Army combat veteran who served tours in Afghanistan and at other stations. Like Murphy, Waltz is serious and thoughtful, with a strong legislative focus on national security. She’s served well and faithfully during her first two terms in Congress. Look where that’s gotten us.ĭistrict 7 has found itself a fine representative in Murphy, an immigrant whose family escaped Communist Vietnam when she was a baby. But politically he comes across as yet another ideologue, and Congress already is silly with those types. Valentin’s a Harvard-educated doctor, so his education credentials are solid. Too many of his other answers - notably on health care - were vague, crossword-puzzle statements of values, not solutions. Fine, but pointing fingers at another continent doesn’t get us any closer to figuring out solutions to protecting both our economy and our people from this outbreak. ![]() ![]() Her opponent, Leo Valentin, was eager to talk about China’s culpability. Stephanie Murphy, District 7 Floridaįor example, Murphy displayed a deep understanding of the nature of the coronavirus outbreak and the challenges in overcoming it. ![]()
