Você feels insolent, condescending, like you could be using o senhor/a senhora/first name but can not be bothered because you think the person is not worth the bother of customization or respect.īut in Portugal, from what I’ve heard, it’s taken as an insult. I need to be very angry at somebody to call them você.). On this thread brazillians say using senhor/senhora can be offensive to some brazillians (Tough luck, I will keep using it in Portugal. Also keep in mind that Brazilians use você in ways that portuguese people would use compound pronouns "para você-> lhe/ para si" "com você-> consigo" "a você - a si". But official communication, polite mode will never use você in the written form and things might be rewritten to passive mode if necessary. Today I saw a publicity outdoor which said "você não é o único a ver este anúncio", though I think that was not essential and the você could have been worked around "Não é a única pessoa a ver este anúncio". Você can be used, in those niches I mentioned, or otherwise when absolutely a neutral pronoun must be included - for example I hear it when I select a gas pump "você selecionou gasolina/gasoleo deste tipo". But like somebody else posted, a witness has been expelled from court over addressing the judge and advogados as você". And usage of você can be perfectly natural on some regions and a particular social cultural niche ( somebody regular here is very vocal about it and claims since it is perfectly natural on some regions and niches we should not warn foreigners not to use it. We know what it is, and perhaps the problem is that we know what it is and always understand it. Is 'você' even a thing in Portugal? I know you guys understand it because of Brazilian speakers, but do you use it?
